So HylaFAX, thinking it has more than 1 modem, tried the first on one modem
and the other on the other one; only after failing it retried the job on the
other-real modem.

HylaFAX will try using a modem if either is true:
1 - you have faxgetty running for the device (/etc/inittab)
2 - you issued "faxmodem <device>"

To undo 1, edit /etc/inittab, comment out old line, and then have it be
reread by the system (on linux "init q", freebsd will have something
similar)
To undo 2, edit startup files and comment faxmodem invocation.

Then restart HylaFAX.

You can leave config files and FIFO in place if you want, or you can delete
them; it does not matter.
