I've been going some more reading.  I'm using ghostscript-5.5 which comes
with RH 7.1.   RH 7.2 comes with ghostscript-6.51.

So, I've read that ghostscript-6.51 supports Adobe new PDF 1.3 (optimized)
version documents whereas ghostscript-5.5 did not support this.

Well, I think I'm going to have to upgrade to RH 7.2.
