The problem with MaxDials is that sendfax always specifies JPARM MAXDIALS during its communication with hfaxd. Therefore, if you wish to use sendfax and have a default MaxDials setting which is not 12, then you must use a sendfax.conf, hyla.conf, ~/.hylarc, or hfaxd.conf file which specifies this. The only time that etc/config will be read for MaxDials is when the fax client has not already specified JPARM MAXDIALS. So the same goes for any other client as with sendfax. If MaxDials is being specified by the client on every communication (as with sendfax), then some default setting for that client must be provided to alter the communication of JPARM MAXDIALS. So, etc/config is for the *server*, but these settings are not used when the client specifies the settings to use. sendfax always specifies MaxDials, so therefore the default configuration files for sendfax must be used instead of (or in addition to) altering the server configuration files. I hope that this makes sense. Note that the configuration files listed above are not used by clients such as Cypheus and WHFC. So, if you use them, and if those clients always specifiy MAXDIALS, then you must use that client's default configuration editor (wherever that is) to adjust MaxDials to something other than 12. Ideally, a client wouldn't specify a parameter unless the user specified it (anyone up to patching sendfax?), but that doesn't seem to be the case.
