This literally means that the modem stopped sending data as expected.  It
means that either the serial driver on the system is foobarred, or it means
that the modem hardware is faulty.  However, I'll bet that this is a
hardware modem and you're running a linmodem driver also on the system.

and note that when using a linmodem driver you cannot use any other
modems... period.
