this is how I understand AVM. I haven't tested it myself with anything other that (3) (yet)

yes and no.

Let's say (3) has two sides: left and rigth
The left side which is seen from apps like (2) is CAPI2. CAPI2 is a (binary) standard
The right side is vendor specific and there is no standard.
Think of (3) as a driver for your specific hardware (like a printer driver under windows
which has a standardized interface to windows -so that windows can make use og it- and
a vendor specifc part to handle the hardware)

current isdn4k has some CAPI support/has some relation to CAPI but do not ask me for details.
(3) is all I ever used until know.

It is also possible to run isdn4k on one fritz and (3) on another in one machine.

I do not know :-(

CAPI as a principle is not complicated: CAPI is "just" a software interface.
The problem is that you do not know which software does offer a CAPI 2 interface
and not all services offered by CAPI2 spec need to be implemented from a certain
driver. And maybe the wording is confusing also.

Fax as a CAPI service for passive cards was not available under windows for some
time because of the computational power which is needed to simulate the analog signal
on a digital processor. Under Linux it took even longer to become availble.
In general you can use CAPI for much more than faxing.

The modem hardware is used for signal processing.

There is a new Fritz!PC which is called V2 (Version 2). Make sure that
your system/kernel can make use of it as it has (AFAIK) different hardware
than the previous version.

Haven't yet needed to reset a system runnig with a Fritz for some months now
(send only)
