Note, however, the faxq manpage: When faxq is run in conjunction with faxgetty processes, it is not necessary to use faxmodem to specify modems; instead the programs communicate informa� tion about the status and capabilities of each modem. The latter setup provides a more robust and powerful system and is the intended way for the software to operate. Note that last line; seems quite pointed, to me. The *only* reason I can see that someone would choose to not run faxgetty would be if they were using the modem for purposes other than faxing (i.e. dial-up), and the fax-function were only an occasional and temporary arrangement.
