Well, hardware incompatibilities do exist, certainly.  See:

Nothing we *can* do about them but try a different piece of hardware.
Don't be fooled into thinking that this is limited to modems, though.  In
the old days, my fax machine woudn't connect with some others, either.  (It
was also a Canon... hmmm.)
