[hylafax-users] Variety of problems

Hello,

System: Linux, Red Hat 6.1 (Cartman)
HylaFAX: HylaFAX (tm) Version 4.1beta3
LibTIFF: 3.5.5
GS GNU Ghostscript 5.50 (2000-2-13)
MODEM: 3COM/USR 56K FAX, Class 2.0

Here's my little laundry list of current problems.

(1) Passwords in HylaFAX

    - I use a fairly complex password with mixed case (upper/lower) and also
"extended" characters in it (you know, %,&,...). HylaFAX password is
not working for my complex password, but does work for a simple password
such as "hello". Why would that be so?

Here's the characteristics of the password that fails:

      - over 8 characters in length, mixed case with extended characters

(2) Following instructions on printing directly to lp DOESN'T WORK RIGHT

      - When following instructions buried in the online support site, should
a user choose to use the following command to print faxes on reception,
they will ONLY get the FIRST PAGE, the rest of the fax will be lost:

       fax2ps $1 | lpr

!!!WARNING!!! !!!DO NOT USE THE ABOVE COMMAND!!!

The proper approach is to convert $1 (incoming parameter) to a .ps file
in a named directory and THEN print the file. For whatever reason, a
pipe only results in a single page of output, regardless of the length
      of the original FAX.

(3) Why am I seeing this message when running faxsetup?

(4) /dev/modem: Can not lock device.

Yeah I know - include standard_RTFM_reply.h

But you know what? /etc/inittab faxgetty modem
                  AND
                   /var/spool/fax/FIFO.modem
                  AND
                   /var/spool/fax/etc/config.modem

all reference /dev/modem which is a symlink to /dev/ttyS0

The device has successfully been checked with minicom. It works. So, now where
could the problem lie? Is it permissions somewhere in the bowels of HylaFAX?
Or is it something to do with /var/lock?

Hopefully someone will try help pull me out of this :(

g.
