faxq needs to be informed of the modem presence and capabilities before it
can queue any faxes for that modem.  To do this, you either run faxmodem or
faxgetty.  If you use faxgetty, your faxstat status output will be more
responsive than if you use faxmodem.

Have you run faxmodem or are you running faxgetty?
