Hm,
slowly i' getting out of ideas....
but another try:
when you type the commands in minicom, how long does your modem to 
respond with OK ? is it fast or does it take some seconds?
perhaps you have to store some of the settings in nvram to get
the modem respond fast enough on initialisation for hylafax.
