Hi everyone, This is to announce that George Farris and me are likely going to merge our efforts to provide a complete HylaFAX client solution. Currently, we have a send-only client, gfax, and a viewer called "the GNU FaXile Viewer" (or gfaxviewer). Plans are to create a library which could handle all input and output from and to any type free fax server, HylaFAX being the first target. In a distant future we might as well implement some kind of character recognition, but it won't be available before every other useful features such as: address book handling, book keeping, remote administration, ... The library is not yet ready but GFax and gfaxviewer and available and useable. Gfax requires GNOME while gfaxviewer only requires GTK+ (a GNOMEified version is on the way). This package will probably be part of the GNU Project, as such it will be tightly integrated with GNU and GNOME, which is the GNU desktop. But since a Windows version will be available, that integration will be optional. The Windows version will be there in order to replace proprietary systems which are available for that platform and help Windows users become aware of the free software movement. The GNU version will be there because there is currently no such package being BOTH useable and user-friendly. The gfax package is currently available from http://www.gmsys.com/gnome-gfax.php while the gfaxviewer is downloadable from http://www.ultim.net/~wolfgang/gfv.php. Both packages are distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. This means that you are welcome to access their source code, to provide any amount of copy you want to anyone else, and to use those programs for any purpose. Btw, you are also welcome to send fixes and enhancements too as well as to report any problem you might encounter. Happy faxing!
