hi, let me throw my heat in here.... you stumbled on a problem which was introduced with gcc 2.95. with it's release there arrised some problems with regexpressions in configure. this was discussed a few month before on the list, and there has been posted a patch to fix this problem. your solution will work without problems, as it is more or less exactly what should be in that lines.
