[hylafax-users] factors in bad scan lines

I'm trying to work on a config file for a Supra 288i Sp modem.  This isn't
critical, I'm just trying to get a feel for general config file
customization.  Anyway, I've seen this before with various modems, and I
don't understand it.  It seems to be line noise, but it's not.  If I put a
USR/3Com modem on the same line I don't have any of these bad scan lines,
but the minute that this modem is there, I get lots of them.  I've noticed
that frequency of bad scan lines will vary from modem to modem in general
anyway.  I've used USR, Rockwell, Supra, and 3Com over the past months
(only to notice that I never have bad scan lines with the 3Com/USR,
occasional with Rockwell, and constant with Supra).  I'll be trying a few
more this coming week, too.  Anyway, my questions are:

What factors influence the receipt of bad scan lines?
Is this something that can be controlled or worked on by the config file?
Why does one modem not have problems, and another one does? firmware?
