Ok; I'll admit to being a little weak on this, but my understanding of
the situation is that if the machine that you've configured with
MAILER(fax) is *not* your internal network's smarthost, then the
standard setup will become pretty confused.  The doco's not as thick
as I'd like on this topic, but I'm working on that.

You might also search the mailing list archives on 'email gateway',
and see what else you find.
