Why are you running faxgetty only in levels 2 and 3? Wouldn't this be more appropriate? S1:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS1 I'm guessing that faxaddmodem is getting hung up because the modem device is locked, probably by faxgetty.
