Well, I installed it from the FreeBSD ports collection, my assumption was that it was configured to correctly check for neecessary dependencies and their versions. Searching the list archives didn't reveal much help either, though describing "fax stops halfway" to a search engine is a bit difficult... ;) I certainly don't blame anyone for not telling me earlier (in fact I'm very relieved that there are helpful people here to point it out) but perhaps it should be in the FAQ, or a heads-ups message in INSTALL/README?
