this could be a lot of problems. Please check 
http://www.hylafax.org/troubleshooting.php and
http://www.hylafax.org/HylaFAQ/index.php
and then give some more infos about your system
(Modem, Version of HylaFax, Version of Linux,
some logs etc.)
