I�m using the same modem for internet, too. 
I force my modem with ATMM2L1 to turn on speaker 
always an it works fine !!!

My chat-script for ppp-up:

TIMEOUT 30
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT ERROR

OK ATM2L1         <<<=== M2L1 !!
OK ATDT019102345
CONNECT   

Hylafay always resets my modem and the
speaker is off.
