flexfax: fax received 'properly, only is sometimes not in TIFF format

I run  hylafax-v4.0pl2 and the following error occurs sometimes

Fax is received., log seems to indicate OK, however, modem is not hung
up properly, although the line is freed
corresponding recvd fax is not in recognised TIFF format, and can not be
read. From other sources I do receive
faxes OK. Sending faxes is fine.
faxmodem = US robotics
operating system =Linux 2.0.30 on Pentium Pro
Telephone line =ISDN.
