flexfax: how do I write a Hylafax client?

What's involved in writing a Hylafax client?  Can an FTP session to port
4559 be used to effect a fax transmission and if so, can someone give an
example of the commands needed for a simple fax session?  (for instance,
send a text or PS fax, to a single phone number, with a cover page)
