This is a a non-default value which is not present in any of the 
standard modem configurations.  The default is 0.

Used here it may violate a protocol timing.

Used in this context it will introduce a serious risk that you will miss the 
reply from the remote modem.   I THINK THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM.
