This looks good. You don't *need* mgetty: you can use any decent 8-bit
clean getty for PPP: I think mgetty will try to sort out, *AGAIN*,
whether it is a voice/data/fax call. That just looks like a source
for confusions to me.

Fair enough: there are a set of different ones for different modems, and
you may need to call your modem manufacturer to get this right.
