flexfax: no response to MPS problem...

Greetings, I have been running hylafax for over 6 months with no problems
(linux 2.0.36, hylafax 4.0pl2, USR courier v.everything), but starting
in the last week, every incoming fax fails.  When sending myself a fax
from another hylafax server, it gets the error "No response to MPS repeated 3
times", the odd thing is that after the remote fax machine reports this error
and hangs up, the problem modem does not hang up, it remains off-hook and
strace shows it is continuously trying to read from the modem, it never
times out and will remain offhook trying to read from a fax machine that hung
up on it for hours or days until someone faxaborts it.  I have tried another
v.everything which has the same symptoms, and I'm going to try another brand
of modem tommorrow, but does anyone have any insight into why this would start
so suddenly, or exactly what can cause MPS to fail?  A short session log is

This is the point at which the remote fax has already hung up, and the local
one is sitting and waiting for something until I abort it...
