You are correct.  I have been working with NT (as an administrator) for many
years and I did not know this.  I had tried over the years several times to
re-name a printer, but could not but I never tried naming it while
installing it.

I tested that and found the following:
Win-NT wil not let you rename a printer once it is installed,
but while installing a new printer, you can give any name you like to it....
so you shouldn't have a problem, because while installing you can give
the "Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS"  a name like HylaFax, you just can`t 
rename it once it is installed.
you should do that install probably as administrator, 
that was the account i used to test it.
