I see from your logs, later, that you're in Europe somewhere.  Is it
possible that your problem is a faulty implementation of one of those
Fax-Anti-Spam measures that some PTT's require in EC market modems?

Ah.  Why the while loop, though?  I should think that the tail command
would be enough, given the backticked command within.
