There is a protocol, yes, but Sam never documented it and does not intend to.

He suggestted to ma, and I now suggest to you, using the -v flag on client 
apps like faxstat and sendfax, faxalter etc to trace the client/server 
conversation.

And you always have the source, of course ;-)
