That is VERY important that there is one less line in the messages file.
That means that deleteing the line fixed that problem.

I would need to see the logfile ( I delete all my mail after reading <g> )
but the problem is that in your $FAXSPOOL/bin, there should be a program
called ps2fax, that should fire up ghostscript.  Either it's missing,
or what it is doing is wrong.  Try to run this program by hand.  There is
a man page ( I believe ) for ps2fax ( NOTE I believe you have to be in the 
$FAXSPOOL directory when you run ps2fax )

All that said, 

I would be inclined to make a copy of your "config" & config.modem files
someplace safe, remove them, and run "faxsetup".  If you don't know how
to answer a question, just accept the default.

This will fully test out your system configuration and make sure things are
what they should be.

At the end, it will ask to add a modem, and I would say yes to that.  If
it works, then your system should be ready to go.  

In the end, this will save you MUCH agony, even if faxaddmodem won't run,
it is worthwhile running faxsetup.
