Using an inetd.conf entry for hfaxd is no longer recommended procedure (it's not your fault, this has confused a number of people). It is better to use the startup script in the sources, etc/hylafax, and put it in the /etc/rc.d directories like the other startup scripts. If you need a copy of it, I can email you one.
