Here's a guess: you should be using the cu device, not the tty device :-). Try
/dev/cuf2 instead of ttyf2. Generally, a tty will not be accessible unless
there is a connected modem on it; you need to use cu devices to do dialing,
etc. This varies by Unix, but is certainly ture of (say) Solaris ....    EM
