I had the same problem... Textfmt does not work with the standard ghostscript fonts - I found another set and put them in /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/fonts and textfmt started working. However, I still have not gotten the ps2fax step to work, so perhaps my "fix" isn't correct. Unfortunately, I do not know where we found these replacement fonts. I do know that they are named by their font names and do not use that ridiculous font map file. Sorry that this doesn't help you much; I'll tar up these font files if you need them.
